4 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Skunks

We are all familiar with skunks and their nauseating odor. If possible, we don’t want to encounter them in our yard. Some of the unfortunate ones who have tasted the power of their spray consider this as a traumatic experience. Skunks are adept diggers. The first sign of their presence would be the shallow holes in your lawn. This is an indication that they are hunting for their food. Other signs of a skunk invasion would be their droppings and their pungent smell.

Homemade Solutions to Keep the Skunks Away from Your Yard

When getting rid of the skunks, we do not promote the use of chemical solution. Poisons and chemicals are indiscriminate killers. They are also illegal, and they pose threat to the homeowner’s health.

Using the Predator’s Urine

Before you opt for this solution, let us remind you first that this will not be a long-term solution. Once the skunk realizes that there are really no predators in your yard, they will continue to hunt for food until the source has been depleted. Most animals will mark their territory with their urine. This contain pheromones that sends a message to the other creatures that someone owns this territory. Perhaps the easiest way to introduce the predator urine in your yard would be to adopt a dog. The skunk will be very wary of the dogs and would rather avoid your property to stay away from conflict.

Motion Activated Water Sprinkler

The skunks do not like the idea of getting wet and would always rather remain dry. Investing on a motion activated water sprinkler would be a great way to deter their invasion. However, placement of the water sprinkler is essential. You have to make sure that it will cover the lawn. If not, the skunk can easily find a path away from the reach of your water sprinkler.

Adding Fence

Another natural solution against the skunk invasion would be to add fence in your yard. Skunks are not adept climbers. Therefore, it will be easy for you to keep them away from your yard. Be sure that the fence will be buried at about 1-2 ft since skunks are good at digging. They also have a tiny body that allows them to fit on small spaces. Ensure that there will be not enough space for them to squeeze their body.

Eliminating their Food Source

In case you are looking for a natural method to get rid of the skunk, the best way to do it is to eliminate the food source. Skunks are scavengers and they are omnivores. Therefore, it will not be easy to eliminate all the possible food. Start by cleaning all the fallen fruits in your yard. Try to harvest the fruits in advance next time. Be sure that your garbage can comes with a secured lid and regularly clean the waste residue outside of the garbage can. Avoid feeding your pets outside especially at night.

You have to be patient when getting rid of the skunk. We encourage you to check the local laws and regulations before you employ the methods we mentioned above.
